Nearly 600 unique plant and animal species depend on the longleaf pine ecosystem, which stretches from Virginia down to Texas. Unfortunately, this forest ecosystem now covers just 3% of its natural range, but a massive conservation effort is underway to bring it back. The Arbor Day Foundation has supported the planting of 15 million longleaf pine trees to date, and we’re committed to doing more with the help of our partners. Join us on this journey!
Through your tree donation, you are positively impacting not only the trees, but also the plants, animals, and people who live in this region.
There are hundreds of unique plant and animal species that depend on this ecosystem including the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker, the gopher tortoise, and the indigo snake, which come together to create a landscape teeming with life.
Approximately 50% of the longleaf pine’s natural range is located on private land. By removing the financial barrier to planting and providing free seedlings to landowners through your donations, we can make a lasting impact. Prioritizing private lands for tree-planting efforts is essential in order to rebuild the region and have a positive impact on global warming.
Longleaf pine is a tree designed for our future. It’s highly resistant to severe weather and disease. It also has an average lifespan of 250 years, meaning it can store carbon for longer periods of time. Throughout its life, the pine tree is also capturing carbon which helps slow climate change.
Caring for the trees is just as important. The Arbor Day Foundation partners with organizations like the Longleaf Alliance who are experts in longleaf pine and the conditions it needs to thrive.
